According to geographers, the Earth remains the best place for human habitation due to the existence of oxygen that supports life around the ecosystem which harbors all the community of living organisms in conjunction with the non-living components of their environment.
The problems posed by environmental degradation in the African continent remains a huge challenge to human existence due to the effect of global warming and climate change. The effect of the fallout of environmental degradation and poor waste management has had a huge negative impact in the economies of many countries, leading to destruction of agrarian landscapes, blockage of drainages, pollution of water, the killing of aquatic creatures, poor living standards of citizens, and even deaths due to floods and illegal dumping of poisonous industrial wastes across the African continent.
In addressing these numerous problems posed by environmental degradation which has become a great problem to the existence of humankind and a sustainable environment, we must look at the role of humanity, who has been identified as the greatest enemy to the living environment.
Environmental crime is at the epicentre of this degradation and contamination of the environment and this is the reason African Youths Initiative on Crime Prevention in partnership with Next Leaders Initiative for Sustainability, NELIS South West, Nigeria Local Chapter, are hosting this all important High Level Symposium on Environmental crime which is the first in Sub-Saharan Africa.
